O’Hare Timeline Events:

Rep. Kirk Lands Spot on Key Committee, Meets With Daley, Takes No Public Position on O’Hare

• Rep. Mark Kirk (R-IL) is assigned to the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, which oversees aviation. Kirk met privately for an hour with Mayor Richard Daley “to discuss issues, including operations at O’Hare.” (Chicago Tribune, 01/09/01)

· Kirk declined the previous day to say whether or not he supports a third airport in Peotone, or favors expansion of O’Hare airport. Kirk is the lone representative on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee’s Aviation Subcommittee from the Chicago suburbs. (Daily Herald, 01/09/01)

Bush Supports Peotone, Receives $100,000 From Airlines Who Unveil Federal Preemption Plan

• Gov. Ryan says that President Bush told him he supports a third airport in Peotone. Paper also reports that Mark Kirk has yet to take a position on the issue. (Daily Herald, 01/11/01)

• The law firm of Winston & Strawn, representing American Airlines, writes a memo “outlining a legal argument for a federal preemption of the state law that gives Ryan veto power over O’Hare expansion.” (Chicago Sun-Times, 01/17/01)
• American Airlines gives $100,000 to the Bush/Cheney inaugural committee. (Chicago Tribune, 01/21/01)
• Peotone supporters and state officials gather to “put together a lobbying strategy for the proj4ect … But with the new, and presumably more sympathetic, Bush administration, the proponents said the chances of making the airport project a reality are better than ever.” (Chicago Tribune, 01/28/01)
  
  
• Jefferey Thomas, president of Chicago’s longtime aviation consultant Landrum & Brown, denies the allegations — first printed in the Tribune Pulitzer-winning series “Gateway to Gridlock” — that his firm changed demand forecast numbers at the request of the city. (Chicago Tribune, 01/06/01)
